Q4 #1

McCarthyism was a phenomena that began post ww2. It is named after Senator McCarthy who allegedly accused Americans of being communist with little to no substantial proof. His accusations affected thousands of innocent lives across America. People lived in fear of being labeled a communist merely out of association or a far fetched connection. The movie 'Good Night, Good Luck' portrays the behaviors of Senator McCarthy relatively well when he accuses a man in the airforce of communist activities. Now, the term 'McCarthyism' is used to describe reckless and empty accusations. Much later did this behavior be deemed unconstitutional. The HUAC- House Un American Activities Committee- is an example of McCarthyism because they carried out the same behavior. McCarthyism effected the lives of people from all races and social classes, and it became a the topic of debate and conflict in the US post WW2. Such reckless behavior today would also lead to chaos and many problems as they did in the 1950s.

  1. Nice post!

It goes over what McCarthyism is pretty well. You say that "the term 'McCarthyism' is used to describe reckless and empty accusations." That's very interesting to me. Because Communism was such a big threat, as America made it out to be, would you say that what McCarthy was doing could have actually been a good thing? Making a public move in the United States against Communism, I think, was a good way to enforce Capitalism. Defending the interests of the country is the duty of a senator, so couldn't one argue that he was just fulfilling his duty? I'd like your opinion on that.

Great job with your video also!

  2. I really like how you talked about both the movie we watched & the more widespread effects and facts about McCarthyism. It's very analytical. My question to you is about HUAC -- how exactly did they exhibit 'the same behavior'? McCarthyism changed how people thought, so I'd like to know if you've any idea about how that worked with HUAC? Overall, a very insightful piece, and I agree with Husain on a lot of his points as well.

Also, remember we have team timeline this week!
